The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increasedr to 9 percentin May, up from 8.1 percent in the department reported Monday. April’s 0.6-point decreasre in unemployment now appears with the May increase part of an upward trend datingto mid-2008, stater officials said. Approximately 272,000 Missourians were estimatee to have been jobless during the monthof May. Nonfarn payroll employment decreasedby 3,70 jobs in May, marking the smallest monthly decrease since employment began to drop sharplhy in November.
Job losses were concentrater inmanufacturing (3,700) and construction (1,600), which were partly offset by gainss in health care and social assistances (2,000) and local government (900). During the past employment droppedby 74,300 or 2.7 percent. The main exceptionds to the downward trend in the past year have been privatee educationalservices (2,500), health care and social assistance federal government (2,700) and loca l government (3,300).
