The Pullman-based university releasee a preliminary budget plan on May 1 afte the state Legislature announced an operating budget that included significangt cuts tohigher education. Wednesday’s announcement reflect s the results of public budgetg forums and meetings heldsince then. The new budgey goes into effect onJuly 1. Job reductionsd include 167 vacant positions and 116 currentlyfillef ones. Another 47 people will take early retirementy while others have shifted from full time topart time.
WSU employas more than 6,200 people across the The three programs that will be cut are the Department of Theaterand Dance, the Departmentr of Community and Rural Sociology and the majorr in German. Students who are majoring in thosde fields will still be able to take coursew to finishtheir degrees, but no new studentzs will be admitted. President Elson Provost Warwick Bayly, deans, chancellors and vice presidents are contributing 5 percenty of theirbase salaries, or a total of about $330,000, to a special fund that has allowefd WSU to save some jobs.
