The federal stimulus package containe two provisions that expand the benefits available to employees whosd jobs have been It extends the election period for eligible employees to determine whethe they wish to enroll in the federaplCOBRA program. The federalp package also provides a subsidy that pays for 65 percenrt of the premium for both COBRAand mini-COBRwA recipients who were laid off between Sept. 1, and Dec. 31, 2009.
Depending on the size of the formeer employer, either the employer or the insurance providet fronts 65 percent of the premium amountt and then recoups that expensde through federal payrolltax credits. Workerds are responsible for the remaininh 35 percent ofthe premium.
