I honestly believe the people were tryinb to do something to help people not get William Hemelt, acting president and chiefv operating officer of Matrixx, said the FDA actio n was taken without reviewing researchn he would have been more than willing to provide. “We thinkl the science does not support this allegationhat all,” he said. “Quiter honestly, we would not be selling the producft if we thought itwas unsafe.
” Zican products use a homeopathic remedy calledc Zincum Gluconicum 2x, which means they requirr FDA approval. Dr. Sam a medical doctor with a homeopathic license, said he can’g figure out why the FDA has taken so long to deal withthe issue. “oI can think of no part of alternative medicinde that summons up more worry to conventional physiciansthan homeopathy,” said who has a medical talk show on KTAR 92.3 FM on Saturdaysz at 2 p.m. and 1,0009 followers on Twitter. “There are so many drugs around thatcause problems, why would one event want to exposr people to any danger.” Brett Berty, a senior recall strategisyt at Stericycle Inc. in Lake Forest, Ill.

Usually, he said, companiex will voluntarily recall a producrt before the FDAgets involved. That’s not how it happenedd with Matrixx. The FDA stepped in and warned Matrixsx that it had received more than 130 consumer complaintx and that the company needed to stop marketing the product unti l it can put a warning label on its packaging that it couldecause anosmia. Over the past 10 Berty has worked with manufacturers to conductabouyt 1,300 recalls, including Vioxx.
“Typically, the manufacturer will work with me prior to approaching theregulatory agency,” he “The most important thing for Matrixz is you can turn a seemingly awfu l situation into an opportunity if you’r judged by the public as being part of the solution. How swiftlyt do they execute that will demonstrated their concern forthe public’z safety.” When the FDA sent the warning letter to Matrixzx and advised consumers not to use certain Zicajm cold remedies, on June 16, Matrixx’ s stock plummeted 70 percent to $5.78 a share. Tough love: CEO rebuilds Nektar Therapeutics - San Francisco Business Times:

http://rusinventor.com/p-521.html
That puts the San Carlos company in a good positioj to weather the credit and investment storm drenchin g other biotechcompanies today. Nektar in the past two monthws alone agreed to sell most of its pulmonarh drug business tofor $115 million then turnedx around and bought back $100 million — or nearly a third of its convertible debt at a fire-sale pricd of 48 cents on the dollar. “It was a complicatef and complex turnaround, and succeszs is not 100 percent guaranteed,” said Nektar Presidenty and CEOHoward Robin. “But now we’re one of the most stabler biotech companies.
” Known as a my-way-or-the-highway Robin has shed some 800 positionds inhis two-year tenure at Nektar — includingt those moving to Novartis when that deal is completexd Dec. 31 — and is on his thirds chief financial officer intwo years. Robin took a similar cost-cutting and refocusing tack at before selling it to in December 2006for $1.1 billion. Still, Nektare has lost $111.1 million through the first nine monthw of this year on revenueof $61.u million. “It’s not a university. It’ds not a day camp. It’s not a placde to experiment and ifit doesn’t do well — oh, well, we’l l move on,” Robin said. “j demand a lot.
” Key to Robin’a plans is Nektar’s polymer conjugate chemistry business, or what’s sometimes referred to as That business reworksexisting drugs, maintaininy their effectiveness but extending, for example, the time the drug spend s in the bloodstream. The technologyg potentially could be applied to hundreds of drugs already on the marketr and is one of the reasons Robin says Nektar will file two investigationalo new drug applications a year with the Food and Drug In the case of PEGylatedirinotecann — taken from a $1 billiob cancer drug known as Camptosa r — early-stage trials suggest that polymer conjugate technologgy could shift dosing from a couple times every 48 hour s to once every three weeks.
Nektard expects to report data from its Phases II irinotecan trial by the endof 2009. It is one of nine proprietaryt Nektar products in clinical or preclinical development at least four of them PEGylationbproducts — along with three productd with partners HealthCare, UCB Pharmwa and Solvay Pharmaceuticals. Nektarr and Bayer will take their inhaledsamikacin program, a treatment for Gram-negativ e pneumonias, into Phase III trials next year. That and another Nektar held onto while selling off most of the pulmonaryh businessto Novartis, underscor Robin’s shrewd dealmaking.
With the Nektar kept potential transferred about 140 employeesto Novartis, kept the rightsx to royalties for another Bayedr program, and shed much of a businesz that burned about $40 million a “That was classic Howard,” said Oleg Nodelman of San Francisco’es , which as of mid-October owned 1.85 percent of “He brought in cash, reduced his burn and reducesd his debt.” In all, Nektar has retireds more than $200 million in convertible debt over the past two That has helped increase the company’sd net cash from $49.
2 million at the end of 2006 to an estimatedd $160 million at this year’s The remainder of that debt doesn’t come due untilk 2012, with a conversion price of $21 per Robin isn’t ruling out another buyback, but he said the pricre must be right. “He has to creat e value by 2012, yes,” Nodelmann said. “Does he have to create value tomorrow? No, not at That’s in large part tied to Nektar’zs cost-cutting emphasis since Robin came aboardr inJanuary 2007.

drops off Nasdaq. In a turbulent economy, ther is no shortage of bad news. Experts say that in a time like what may matter most is the way in whicn that bad newsis communicated. How managemeng deals with the media, employees, clients and the communituy could impact how the businesss is viewed for yearsto come. Businessw leaders who hide in their bury facts and let the rumoe mill control the story will be viewed with angerdand distrust. This way, basic guidelines are in place when any sort of bad from layoffs to achemical spill, breaks. Additionapl preparation should take place once a bad newseventg occurs. The first step is to assess the situatiomn and thepossible fallout.
“I advise that you convene a grouopof stakeholders,” said Pauline Bartel, president of Waterford-baser “You need someone from top management, human resources, the PR team ... the objecr is for everyone to put their cardws onthe table, face up, so you can identifg any gaps in information.” Next, list every constituency, including clients, supplierss and the media, and craft a messagew for each. While these messages must be consistent, each audienc e has different needs. Employees will want to know about their futures, while shareholders will be interested in the impact on the bottom line. Clients will want to know if servicr willbe affected.

Memphis Business Journal:

A survey by America's Health Insurance Plans, an industryu trade group in Washington, D.C., found small-grouop coverage in 2006 averaged $312 per montbh for single coverageand $814 per month for family coverage. Helen Darling, president of the National Business Grouo on Healthin Washington, D.C., said that when evaluatinb plan options, employers shoule consider the quality of care provided to its membersw and not just the premium First on her list is checkinbg to make sure the insurer is accredited by the Nationao Committee for Quality Assurance.
Next would be readingh throughthe plans' HEDIS (Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set) which the NCQA accumulateds to track plans on varioua performance measures. "You can find out thingzs like what percentage of theid members receivea beta-blocker after suffering a heart attack," Darling said. "I'd also make sure the physiciansa in theplan are, with very few board certified. And I'd want to see that the plan hasa 'centerd of excellence' program for certain procedurez such as organ transplants and cardiovascular care.
" When evaluating Darling suggested businesses ask for a breakdown of all prices to determinre whether it might be cheaper to outsourcew certain part of the such as prescription pharmacy benefits. Among the variou s types of employer-sponsored health insurance plans, managed-care optionsa dominate the landscape. In its national survey of employee-sponsored health plans, the consulting firm Mercee Human Resource Consulting found that preferrer providerorganizations (PPOs) were the most popular option in 2006, at 61 followed by health maintenance organizations (HMOs) at 24 Both HMOs and PPOs have contracts with networks of physicians, hospitalsw and other health-care networks.
Members pay less for servicesxprovided "in-network," but typically have the options of paying higher "out-of-network" fees to goiny to providers not in the network. HMOs are more restrictivre by having members selecta primary-care physiciahn who must approve visits to specialists. PPOs typically carrt slightly higher deductiblesand co-payments, but no restrictions on visits to specialists - making the option generallg more favorable to members. In order to hold down managed care plans are increasingly offering customeras a tie red pricing planfor pharmaceuticals.
Membersx pay the least for generic slightly morefor brand-name products in the plan's formularh of approved drugs, and the most for brandd names drug not on the formulary Traditional indemnity coverage, which accounted for aboutr 50 percent of employer-sponsored plansw in the early 1990s, has steadily plungeed during the past decade and hit just 3 percent last year accordingy to the Mercer survey.
The newest option is consumer-directesd or consumer-driven health plans, abbreviated as Chaps, which feature high deductiblee along with health savings accounts or health reimbursement Withsuch plans, employees and employerx can make a pre-tax contributiomn to a health savings which is used to pay for routinr medical care. Any fundz left in the account at the end of the year can be used insubsequentg years. If the fund is depleted, the employee's coveragew converts to a high-deductible managed-care plan.
Proponents of Chapsx say they help people becomebetter health-cared consumers because their own money is Critics fear people will put off necessary treatment to avoide emptying their accounts. "They are not the right choice for every employer oreveryt employee, but they can help both employers and employeee save money," said Jessica Waltman, vice president of policy and stat affairs for the National Association of Healtbh Underwriters in Arlington, Va. Waltma said some younger, childless employees decide to opt out ofan employer'sx plan because they typically don' get sick or even go to a doctor'a office.
"A consumer-directed plan is a way to enticd younger workers to go into the company healthyinsurance plan," she said, noting the featurwe that allows people to rollover unused funds for futuree health-care services. "There really are a wide array of health plansout there, but most peopld (in employer-sponsored plans) end up with a PPO product becausw of pricing," Waltman said. Waltmaj also said employees are attracted to PPOs because they allowa members the ability to go to any docto r inthe plan's network withougt a referral. "Employers will gravitate to whatemployeees like," she said.
