Chevrolet-Saturn of Harlem Inc., a New York-based affiliatew of the Detroit automaker, was the first GM affiliatd to seek bankruptcy protection Monday morning throughthe U.S. Bankrutpcy Court'w Southern District of New York, according to courtg records. The restructuring will enabled GM to emerge as a viable entity under the brand namenew GM. It also will give the federapl government, which plans to make availabldeabout $30 billion of federal assistancr to support the restructuring, a large ownershipo stake in the company.
Two area companies were amongf the list of creditorsin GM'ds filing: New York-based Bank of New York Mellon, with claimsx of $176 million, and Downtown-based US Steel, with claimsz of $9.6 million.
